BPH Procedures · Rezum

Rezum water-vapor therapy for men whose BPH anatomy fits an office-based option.

Rezum uses targeted water vapor to shrink prostate tissue that contributes to urinary blockage. It is usually considered for selected men who want a minimally invasive BPH option and are willing to accept a recovery period while treated tissue resorbs.

Who this may fit

  • Men with bothersome urinary symptoms from BPH who want to avoid or delay more invasive surgery.
  • Selected patients with anatomy where water-vapor therapy can address the obstructing tissue.
  • Men comparing medication, UroLift, Rezum, TURP, HoLEP, and Aquablation.

Evaluation before treatment

Workup reviews prostate size, median lobe, urinary retention history, infections, PSA context, and bladder emptying.

Patients should understand catheter possibility, delayed symptom improvement, and the chance that another procedure may be needed later.

Recovery and follow-up

Temporary urinary urgency, burning, frequency, blood in urine, and catheter use can occur after treatment.

Symptom improvement is not immediate because the treated tissue needs time to shrink and heal.

Common questions

How is Rezum different from UroLift?

Rezum ablates tissue with water vapor. UroLift places implants to hold prostate tissue away from the urinary channel.

Does Rezum preserve sexual function?

Rezum is often discussed because of favorable sexual-function preservation compared with some older operations, but individual risk still needs review.
